Paradise Clix Interview - Patrick Frazer (2019 U.S. Nationals winner)

*When, where and with who you started to play Heroclix?

I started playing casually at home after seeing a taskmaster (CW 048) clix at the Chicago Comic and Enterainment Expo, but didn't start playing competitive clix until 3 years ago at The Dice Dojo in Chicago.
I met Nate White (This year's Indiana States Champion) there and we decided to team-up and prepare for worlds. There isn't a more creative and skilled mind in the game, so I kind of got lucky having him as a practice partner.
Ken Smalls (Top32 at this year's Nationals) joined the team and he's the most technically sound player I've played against.
We're a small squad, but I couldn't ask for better teammates in the Chicago Clix Mafia.

*How you would describe Heroclix?

When describing it to people that are unfamiliar with the game, I liken it to superhero chess. It's an oversimplification,  but explains enough.

*What is your game style?

I'm not really sure if I have a style. Im definitely a sucker for prob and perplex. It's hard to miss when you have a few throws to hit a 4.

*How often do you play heroclix? Everyday? Do you play online (Roll20) as well?

I play Nate White about 4 times a week on Roll 20. I don't get to a venue much anymore, although I try to get to Ken Smalls weekly Win-a-Bricks at The Dice Dojo as often as I can. I've done a few Win-a-Maps on Roll 20 and I highly recommend it to players getting ready for Worlds. There's usually only 8 people but the talent pool is loaded and a real test for any team you're considering for the big ones.

*What were your main achievements?

The Chicago Clix Mafia finished top 4 in Teams Nationals this year, which is a really fun event. I don't typically play much sealed, but playing in a competitive atmosphere with your friends against the most talent players in North America is just a good time.
I won the Chicago WKO to qualify and at the last worlds and nationals I finished top 32 and top 16 respectively.

*Do you think Heroclix its “pay to win”? Do you think its an expensive hobbie?

That's a difficult and subjective question. Sidelines can be expensive, but they can be used with any team, so to a certain degree there is a floor dollar amount necessary to compete in the larger competitive scene. There are budget teams, uni-mind isn't an expensive piece, Medusa squads are cheap, and vulture is a decent price. PJ Bolin runs a great piece lending page on Facebook. I'm don't know much about other collectable games, but I feel like heroclix is on the cheaper side of the hobby.

*Before the U.S. Nationals who did you think would be the champion?

II try not to display much bravado but I have plenty of self confidence whether it's justified or not. I've never been on any power rankings but I've played a lot of people on those lists and have been happy with the results. I thought I had just as a good a chance as anyone coming into the tournament, but I can think of at least 40 people that could have taken it.

*Your team (U.S. Nationals) and strategy?

It was pretty straightforward. Use perplex to make Hawkeye and Vulture hit hard and often. Have a couple probs to make sure they stick, and since you have both Hawkeye and Vulture, you can be a little more cavalier with one and have the other clean up. Groot is an excellent retaliator and Unseen really pulled his weight.

*Do you think Vulture is overpowered (mainly with Octopus arms equipped) and do you think WizKids will nerf it as they did in the past with broken pieces?

I think there was only 1 vulture in the top 16 and there are plenty of ways to prevent vulture equipping or keeping the arms. With the gas can retiring, I think it'll be much easier to keep vulture in check and I don't anticipate any nerf. Without Hawkeye, I don't plan on playing Vulture at worlds as of now.

*There’s any remarkable match (U.S. Nationals) you remember?

There wasn't an easy match over the entire weekend. My first match against Derrick Thompson's dont die team went to last action when my Cyclops call in KOed his Chamber call in.
Brian Galley had an incredibly effective team featuring two Gardners and a Trader that handed me my first loss.
PJ Bolin also beat me in Swiss with his soldier team (3 foot elite, Sam Cap, Phil Coulson, 2 ameridroids and a couple henchmen). I was worried about this match up, but I'd have a rematch in the top 4.
In the top 16 I played Daniel Powell, Matty G, PJ and Easton Brock. That's an incredibly brutal stretch of the top players in the game, but they're all great guys and I had a lot of fun.

*What do you think of the current meta?

I think the meta is as diverse as I've seen in my 3 years if competitive play although it all changes at the end of the month. I expect the Elders to have a pretty big impact and maybe X-Men will make a comeback. I'm excited to play around with some things before worlds.

*If you could choose one character to be created by Wizkids, which character would be?

I'd really like to see a space shark generic from Jason Aaron's Thor run.
*Any advice for the new players?

Be patient and always bring prob!

*Would you like to let a message to the readers?

I hope to see everyone in Memphis for Worlds! This is a great community and I always have fun playing with you guys! No Cut, Get Cut
